I have read several threads about "silver" or "gray" colored rear differential oil in the drain pan at the first rear diff oil change, usually at relative low hours of use. Some say it is metal contaminate. I've read it described "like silver paint".Step 4. Attach an oil jug pump to a quart bottle of demand drive fluid, then attach a length of 5/16th hose to the pump. Step 5. Place the hose into the front differential fill hole, and slowly pump the demand drive fluid into the diff. Continue to fill the diff until the fluid reaches the fill hole and begins to spill out. Step 6. My Subaru takes some "special" synthetic gear oil only available in 75W90. Not that hard to find but it's at least double that of regular GL-5 gear oil. But the rear differential takes GL-5 80W90 regular oil. Just like the front differential on a Polaris uses GL-5 80W90 non synthetic. Bass ackwards...Then bolt on the cover, using the pattern above. 9. Add the recommended fluid through the filling port and limited slip additive, if necessary. Use a fluid pump for easier filling. Replace the filler bolt, and torque to spec. 10. Lower the vehicle and take it for a test drive.
